What is Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis)?
The adaptogen Cordyceps is an asian ascomycete fungi that has a long history as a medicinal fungi, dating back to at least the 15th Century in Tibet (where it was often used as anaphrodisiac). This unique fungi is parasitic in nature; after attacking its insect hosts–who unwittingly spread the fungi–the mycelium replaces its bodily tissues and fruits.
Like many fungi species, Cordyceps are sources of biochemicals that have many pharmacologically useful properties in modern medicine, and some medicines likeCordycepin have been derived from it. Subsequently, it is also used traditionally for improving overall health, increasing testosterone and boosting endurance.
How does Cordyceps work?
Cordyceps contains a variety of ingredients such as polysaccharide components, flavones, cordycepin, sterols and 2′-deoxyadenosine, as well as proteins, fatty acids and vitamins. In Vitro and animal studies suggest that the cordycepin and polysaccharides have some anticancer activity and effectiveness in inhibiting tumor growth. In fact, it has been illustrated thatCordyceps sinensis protects bone marrow and the digestive system of irradiated mice. Further research shows that cordyceps may be effective for treating insulin resistance, protecting the liver from damage and fighting depression.
