By combining cutting-edge pharmaceutical-grade ingredients with tried-and-tested high-quality herbal extracts, new Achilles from Antaeus Labs brings you the most advanced joint-support formula on the market!
Every hero has a weakness. For many weightlifters and bodybuilders this is their joints. Tendons and ligaments bear the brunt of punishing weight-lifting sessions, commonly becoming inflamed and sore.
The connective tissue just can't keep up with the heavier and heavier weights lifted week after week.
Niggling pains become chronic injuries, often requiring a forced rest, a change of routine or the permanent dropping of some exercises altogether.
40 years of scientific research has established Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) as one of the most important endogenous painkilling and anti-inflammatory compounds.
The naturally occurring fatty acid amide palmitoylethanolamide is an agonist of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-α). PPAR-α agonists have been shown to be effective for both acute and chronic pain.
PEA can modulate pain sensitivity (nociception) by regulating mast cells. Mast cells release bioactive mediators like histamine (that dilates blood vessels leading to swelling, redness, and warmth ) and nerve growth factor (that produces inflammation and sensitization of pain-sensing neurons ).
Brazilian traditional medicine uses H. aphrodisiaca for, among other things, muscle and bone weakness – use that has been borne out recently when a study found that H. aphrodisiaca-treated trained rats had stronger tendons that could take a bigger load and more stress than untreated trained rats.
“H. aphrodisiaca associated with endurance training contributed to more efficient remodeling of the extracellular matrix, resulting in more resistant tendons to support high loads from intense muscle contraction. These findings suggest that H. aphrodisiaca infusion is a potential aid to optimize tendon remodeling in athletes.”
Kirenol The plant Xi Xian Cao (Siegesbeckia orientalis) has been used for centuries in traditional chinese medicine (TCM) for its anti-inflammatory properties. One constituent of Siegesbeckia is Kirenol – which has recently been discovered to be a potent anti-inflammatory that also suppressed joint inflammation and inhibited cartilage and bone destruction in a rat model of arthritis.

Asthisamharaka (Cissus Quadrangularis) is another herb that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to heal broken bones and injured ligaments and tendons. Numerous studies show that Cissus is anti-osteoporotic and pro-osteogenic, and it’s long been a staple in the arsenal of athletes and bodybuilders with joint problems.
“There was shortening of about two weeks in the duration of bone healing. The hastening in the fracture healing was attributed to the stimulation of all cells of mesenchymal origin, namely, the fibroblasts, chondroblasts and osteoblasts, by Cissus quandrangularis.”
The gum of the Boswellia Serrata tree has been researched for its myriad of benefits. Research suggests that it may have an anti-inflammatory effect, which may be useful for rheumatoid arthritis. Studies in which subjects with rheumatoid arthritis were given Boswellia for three months reported decreased pain and swelling. It also may be beneficial for osteoarthritis as well according to a study involving subjects with osteoarthritis of the knee. 15 subjects were administered Boswellia Serrata Extract for eight weeks. Subjects reported reduced knee pain in addition to enhanced flexibility. Boswellia's anti-inflammatory benefits may be due to the fact that it works to inhibit 5-Lipoxygenase. 5-Lipoxygenase is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in manufacturing pro-inflammatory cytokines, which supports systemic inflammation.
NutraPlanet: What prompted you to release a joint supplement?
Antaeus Labs: I think it's a combination of the exciting research that was coming out about some of the ingredients that we went on to include, and a desire to help people recover from injuries. I felt a multi-faceted approach should yield better results than people are experiencing with some of the products currently on the market.
NutraPlanet: You want to… help people?
Antaeus Labs: Of course! Sports and weightlifting soft-tissue injuries are incredibly common. Anything we can do to help minimize the time spent recuperating – or in pain – is well worth doing. It has a real impact on people's quality of life.
NutraPlanet: So tell us a little about your formulation.
Antaeus Labs: It has several different naturally-occurring anti-inflammatory, pain-modulating, and anti-oxidant ingredients – though most of them are probably unfamiliar to most consumers. Two that people may be familiar with are Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) and Cissus Quadrangularis. Cissus is a very popular joint supplement, and PEA is an extremely well-studied PPAR-alpha agonist with combined anti-inflammatory and pain-reducing properties.
NutraPlanet: The dose of Cissus you use seems low, compared to some other products?
Antaeus Labs: Indeed it is, deliberately so. There are a number of peer-reviewed studies on Cissus, almost all relating to its effects on bone health and regeneration, and as far as I know none of them demonstrating positive effects on tendon or ligament healing. Nevertheless, it's probably the second-most popular joint supplement on the market, and some people swear by it. We've included it at a moderate dose, to limit the number of caps people have to take to a reasonable number. Of course, if people want to take a higher dose of cissus than is found in Achilles it's easy enough to "top-up" with a cissus-only product.
NutraPlanet: The cissus isn't standardized for ketosterone content?
Antaeus Labs: I've seen no evidence that ketosterones are the active constituent of the cissus extract, so to standardise for them could in fact make the extract less potent.
NutraPlanet: What is the optimal dose of Achilles, and can it be increased if required?
Antaeus Labs: The recommended dose of Achilles is four capsules per day; ideally, two in the morning & two in the evening, with meals. Four capsules contains the optimal dose for most of the ingredients that this formula contains. The major exception would be the Cissus extract, where the optimal dose seems to be in the 2200-3000mg/day range.
People who would like to augment this formula with additional Cissus are should consider stacking Achilles with "Super Cissus RX".
NutraPlanet: How long after people start taking it should they expect to see an improvement?
Antaeus Labs: The anti-inflammatory effects should come on fast, and should be noticeable within hours. Actual tendon/ligament healing takes weeks – so people suffering from acute injuries or overuse injuries should use the product for at least a month, while refraining from any exercise which would place stress on the affected tendon, joint or ligament.
NutraPlanet: Is it for acute injuries or only for chronic complaints?
Antaeus Labs: I think that people suffering from acute injuries should first see a doctor – preferably an orthopedic specialist. If the injury is nothing serious, this product might help them recover more quickly and might alleviate some pain. If the injury is severe, they might need heavy-duty painkillers or surgical treatment.
NutraPlanet: Should this be used instead of, or as well as RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) or MEAT (Movement, Exercise, Analgesics, Treatments)?
Antaeus Labs: This product can perhaps speed up the healing process & alleviate discomfort – but it's no panacea. It can't take the place of RICE or MEAT. It would be better to use it along with them.
NutraPlanet: Can it be used in conjunction with NSAIDs?
Antaeus Labs: There should be no significant interactions between Ibuprofen & any component in Achilles. Palmitoylethanolamide might improve the efficacy of Acetaminophen. (Between us, this may be due to the fact that PEA is an endocannabinoid-inducer, and Acetaminophen is essentially an endocannabinoid reuptake inhibitor. PMID: 20035773) The short answer to this question is yes: You can use Achilles along with your OTC NSAID.
NutraPlanet: "Is there any additional benefit to our customers stacking Achilles with another joint supplement, like Joint Force, Joint Fixx, or Skeletal Balm?"
Antaeus Labs: "I believe that it stacks remarkably well with every other joint-support product on the market. JointForce, Joint Fixx, & SuperCissus are all excellent ideas for a stack.
…Joint Fixx, a cartilage-repair supplement, would be a great thing to use with Achilles — which is expressly designed to repair, strengthen and fortify tendons and ligaments. SuperCissus augments the Cissus dosage in Achilles & eliminates the product's known 'design flaw'. JointForce is an excellent topical formula which can help augment healing and analgesia, with no potential for side effects or negative interactions. And so on… Of course, Achilles should be more than potent enough for standalone use."
